The Chapin 20000 is a cheap and compact handheld sprayer – very easy to use, with enough pressure and not too difficult to carry. Perfect for smaller yards and gardens.
Pros:
- Very easy to use
- Compact, easy to carry
- Extra cheap
Cons:
- No pressure relief valve
Compact Handheld Tank
As a compact handheld sprayer, the Chapin 20000 offers a 1-gallon tank – the polyethylene is nice, thick and also translucent (with markings) so you can see the fluid level easily. And the in-tank filter against clogging is present as well.
The opening is not that large but includes a funnel so you don’t have to worry about spilling chemicals. Just do not overfill it (there is a mark for maximum amount of liquid), otherwise you won’t be able to generate enough pressure.
When filled, it’s not too heavy and you can carry it around fairly easily. A shoulder strap is not included, but can be attached.
Very Easy to Use
Users really like this sprayer as it is so easy to use. You just pump it every few minutes (it takes about 3 pumpings before the tank is empty) and get a nice and even spray. The sprayer provides a decent pressure and the pumping is fairly smooth and easy.
Warning: You actually pressurize the whole tank, not just a pressure chamber like on backpack sprayers. So when under pressure, don’t open it and don’t leave it on direct sun for a long time!
Only 1 Nozzle
To enable spraying hard-to-reach places, the Chapin 20000 is equipped with a 12" wand – which is not perfect but gets the job done. And when you don’t need it, you can just snap it into the base of the handle for easier carrying.
There is no lock for continuous spraying but that’s not a big deal with only a 1-gallon tank.
It offers only one nozzle, adjustable from a stream to finer mist. It works pretty fine, many sprayers offer much better tip selection of course, but they also cost eight times more.
Perfect for Small Properties
The 20000 is a perfect tool for a smaller yard, it’s much more convenient than those little spray bottles. Also, the low price enables you to get a few of them to avoid cross-contamination (1 for fertilizer, 1 for herbicide, 1 for stain or bleach etc.) – just mark them with stickers or a marker.
On the other hand, it gets empty fairly quickly (5-10 minutes, 15-20 on mist, according to users) so it’s definitely not a tool for larger projects.
Mentioned Problems
While most customers were satisfied with their purchase, there were also some mentioned disadvantages of this product. Mainly, there is no pressure relief valve so be careful when opening it, particularly when using chemicals. A few useful tips can be found here, one user also recommended turning the tank upside down and letting air out of the wand.
A few people also mentioned a problem with air leaks and holding pressure or commented on the lower quality of the plastic wand.
Conclusion: If you need a cheap and compact sprayer for your garden or a small yard, the Chapin 20000 would be an ideal choice. It’s very easy to use and offers solid pressure, we can definitely recommend it.
On the other hand, the 1-gallon tank is too small for medium or larger projects – a quality backpack sprayer would be a better choice there.
