The Black & Decker GH3000 is a powerful electric weed eater. It’s lightweight, comfortable to use and features a nice edger adjustment; however, some users also report problems with advancing the line.
Pros:
- Great power
- Edger with guide wheel
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Some users report problems with line feed
- Not as good for taller people
Key specifications:
- Edger:
- Weight: 6.9 lbs

Corded
The GH3000 offers all the advantages of electric corded tools – it’s lightweight, quiet, not expensive and doesn’t require maintenance or dealing with fuel or batteries. On the other hand, you are limited by dragging the extension cord around so you won’t get the freedom typical for gas or battery powered machines.
The engine is positioned on top so it has a nice balance and is very comfortable to operate – you’ll get tired only after a longer trimming. As with other Black&Decker trimmers, the assembly is quick and easy – you just attach the guard (one Phillips screw) and handle which can be done in a few minutes.
Power and line feeding
You may be surprised as this model has really a lot of power – it’s probably one of the most powerful electric units currently on the market (not counting the brushless machines). It handles taller grass or weeds without any problem – but don’t expect a gas power of course. Also the necessity to use power cord limits its use for larger properties..
An autofeed system is used to advance the line so no bumping is required – most users are pleased with it; however, there are also many complaints that it feeds too much, eating through the spool quickly. The question is if it’s simply a flaw on some machines or if an incorrect use is to blame as well. It seems this trimmer requires a more continuous cutting without frequent starting and stopping for the autofeed system to work as expected.
Edger and adjustments
As most corded weed whackers, this one also features an edger function. The switching is very easy, also a small guide wheel is present – users report it rolls smoothly and is great for edging, but not much useful for trimming – the string reaches slightly beyond the wheel so it can’t be used as a precise guard for protecting your flowers or when cutting near fence or wall.
Other adjustments include setting the angle of the handlebar and also the shaft length – however, it’s not that long even when fully extended so taller people (over 6 feet) would have to bend over slightly to use it, particularly when edging (because of the curved shaft turned upside down).
Conclusion: If you want an electric trimmer with great power that won’t also ruin your budget, the Black & Decker GH3000 would be a perfect match for you. It’s lightweight, comfortable to use a with a nice edger mode.
However, there is a relatively large number of disappointed users complaining about the autofeed, that’s why we gave it only 4 stars instead of 4.5 – so if you don’t want to risk that, we would rather recommend you for example the GreenWorks 21272.

Frequently asked questions:
How to change the line spool?

Are there any accessories I should buy?
We recommend getting one or more replacement spools and if you don’t have a long extension cord yet, go with the Coleman 100 feet cable.
It’s also possible to save money and wind the spool yourself with a line of your choice (for example the high quality Cyclone line).

Is there any maintenance needed?
No, the motor is an enclosed unit so no maintenance is required. Just clean the machine from dead grass occasionally.
