The Chapin 61500 is a well made backpack sprayer – very easy to use and clean, comfortable to wear and for a good price. Plus it doesn’t leak.
Pros:
- Easy to use and clean
- Comfortable to wear
- No leaking
Cons:
- Pumping handle only for left hand
Large Tank, Euro Style
The Chapin 61500 offers a large 4-gallon tank, but in the more compact “Euro style” design with the hose coming off the top of the unit, not the bottom.
The opening is fairly wide (4 inches), easy to fill without spilling and the filter basket helps to keep debris out. Plus users report no leaking at all.
There is only a minimal assembly required, you just attach the pump handle (5-10 minutes) and you’re ready.
Comfortable Harness
When the tank is full, it certainly takes some effort to get on your back. So if possible, put it on a table first. And women would probably use only 2 or 3 gallons of liquid in the tank, not 4.
However, when it’s sitting on your back, it is actually comfortable to wear. The padding on the shoulder straps is adequate and the chest strap helps as well. The only drawback is that if you’re taller, the bottom of the tank can hurt your lower back a bit, some padding would be nice there.
Easy Pumping But on the Left Side Only
The piston pump offers a decent pressure, you get a nice stream without any hiccups. And when you release the trigger, it stops immediately, no dripping of chemicals. Also, it features Viton seals for the top chemical resistance.
Unfortunately, you cannot alter the position of the hand pump so you have to use your left hand for pumping. It requires you to pump quite frequently – however, the vast majority of users described it as easy and comfortable, even while walking and spraying at the same time. The movement of the handle is smooth, without any uncomfortable impacts.
2 Nozzles, No Clogging
The wand is fairly long, you can spray in a comfortable position without bending over. The only issue is that the Euro style makes it a bit harder to get the wand around into your right hand (the hose exits the tank on the left side) – but nothing too bothering.
There are only 2 nozzles included (adjustable poly cone and fan tip), but both work fine and cover all the main spraying tasks.
And even though the 61500 uses a 2-stage filtration system instead of a 3-stage one, customers report no clogging of the tips even after months of use.
Conclusion: If you are looking for a high quality backpack sprayer with large a tank, Chapin 61500 would be a great choice for you. It’s easy to use, wears comfortably and doesn’t leak – we can definitely recommend it.
On the other hand, if you don’t insist on the Euro style, check out also the Field King Professional, which is even better in our opinion – more powerful and with a built-in agitator.
