The EGO Power+ 15-Inch String Trimmer is a quality cordless weed eater, designed as an eco-friendly alternative to gas trimmers. It’s a bit pricey but offers excellent power, solid battery working time and fast recharge. Also, it’s easy to use, quiet and not too heavy.
Pros:
- Great power
- Solid battery run time, fast recharge
- Variable speed, bump feed
- Not too heavy
Cons:
- Pricey
- No indicator of remaining charge
Key specifications:
- Edger:
- Weight: 9 lbs
- Battery time (according to users): 20-50 minutes
Plenty of Power + Variable Speed
The EGO Power+ String Trimmer is designed as a fumes and maintenance-free alternative to gas powered units – same power but no fuel mixing, problems with starting etc. And thanks to the brushless motor and dual 0.095 string, the power is really amazing – it cuts through tough weeds or tall grass easily, without any stalling or choking.
Just don’t forget this is no toy, it can send debris and small rocks flying in every direction, so wear boots, long pants, sleeves and eye protection (ideally a full face mask).
Most users reported the original string did not wear too quickly and lasted for a long time (and that it’s also easy to replace), only a few did not like it and replaced it with a 0.08 one. The trimmer uses a bump feed to advance the line, which works great.
Also, you can regulate the speed using the trigger – very useful for preserving the battery juice or when you need to work more carefully around flowerbeds or trees.
Solid Battery Time and Fast Recharge
The 56-Volt 2.0 Ah battery offers a solid working time of about 20-50 minutes (depending on the selected speed) and is compatible with other EGO Power+ tools as well. And the recharge time is really fast – about 30 minutes!
The only small disadvantage is the missing indicator of remaining battery juice – there is only a green light which starts blinking red when the battery needs to be recharged. Similar weed whackers often use three LEDs indicating the charge level – that would be much better.
Easy to Handle, Quiet, Not Heavy
Out of the box, the machine is easy to put together, instructions are clear and easy to follow. And for a unit this powerful it’s surprisingly quiet and light, the weight is also nicely balanced so it doesn’t get too uncomfortable even after a longer time.
The position of the forward handle can be adjusted along the shaft and it’s even padded with foam for more comfortable holding. What’s interesting is that EGO offers both straight and split shaft versions – but the difference is only cosmetic (see the FAQ below).
Okay for Cleanup, No Problems with Edging
We can say there are models definitely more suitable for cleanup, the long 49-inch shaft may get too bulky sometimes. On the other hand it makes it easier to get under bushes or other areas difficult to access.
Also, there is no edger adjustment; however, (as you can see in some of the videos above) it’s pretty easy to just flip the unit upside down and use it that way, no problem there.
Conclusion: If you are searching for a powerful trimmer without the disadvantages of gas machines, the Ego Power+ trimmer would be an excellent choice for you – its power is comparable to the gas units, it’s lightweight, quiet and offers a solid battery working time, plus fast recharge. We can definitely recommend it.
But if you need a more compact unit mainly for cleanup or medium-difficulty jobs, we would rather recommend you the cheaper Black & Decker LST136W.

Frequently asked questions:
Should I get the straight or split shaft version?
The only difference is that you can fold the split shaft in half and save storage space – there are no attachments or anything like that. So if you don’t need the folding possibility, it doesn’t matter which version you choose – take the one which is currently cheaper or in stock.
How should I treat the battery to ensure maximum lifetime?
Always store the batteries inside your house in reasonable temperatures – never leave them on direct sun or outdoors during winter! It is also advisable to recharge the battery as soon as it is out of power.
What is included in the package?
The weed eater itself, 1 battery, charger and a spool with line. Or you can get a bare-tool without the battery and charger.
Are there any accessories I should buy?
Many buyers get a prewound spool – however, for the same price you can get 10 times as much line if you replace it yourself (which is quite easy).
And unless you have a larger yard, you won’t probably have to buy a spare battery.
Is there any maintenance needed?
No, the motor is an enclosed unit so no maintenance is required. Just ensure a proper care to the battery (see above) and clean the machine from dead grass occasionally.
