Gas powered

a man trimming grass on his garden using the TCG22EASSLPThe TCG22EASSLP shares all the advantages of gas weed whackers – great power, complete freedom of movement, no messing with the cord (and winding it up after trimming) or switching outlets. Also you are not limited by battery life. On the other hand, it requires mixing the gas-oil fuel and a little maintenance.

However, most of the typical disadvantages of gas powered tools are not present, or at least very limited – it’s lightweight, perfectly balanced and easy to maneuver, it’s not a problem even for women or seniors to use it for longer periods of time. It doesn’t vibrate much and the noise is also on a decent level (but it’s definitely louder than electric units of course)..

It requires only a little assembly (mounting the guard and handle), all needed tools are included.

Power and line feeding

For a machine that compact, the power is simply awesome – it cuts through tall dense grass and tough weeds without any problems, the only thing it can’t cope with are thicker and woody bushes (but you can get a brush cutter extension for that – more about it below). And it always starts on first or second pull, even after a year of service (as users report).

The trigger is well placed and nicely responsive, it’s really easy to control the power. Only the placement of the off button could have been better, users report that you can hit it accidentally sometimes.

The trimmer uses bump feed to advance the line and it works without any problems, also the line is easy to replace.

Brush cutter add-on and edging

This Tanaka string trimmer does not offer a built-in edger adjustment – but when turned upside down, it can be used for edging quite successfully. Just be careful around the hot exhaust vent!

As we have already mentioned, it can be used with a blade cutter conversion kit (not included) which consists of larger shield, additional handle for more stabilization, shoulder strap and all necessary bolts and attaching hardware. For serious and frequent brushcutting we would rather recommend you one of the larger machines with “bicycle” handlebars, but for occasional jobs it’s completely sufficient.

Conclusion:  If you want a high quality gas weed eater, Tanaka TCG22EASSLP is the right choice for you – powerful, lightweight and easy to handle and also not overly expensive. We highly recommend it.

Frequently asked questions:

What kind of fuel is required?

The machine is 2-cycle so a mix of gas and oil (50:1) is required. We recommend using a non-ethanol blended, high octane gas and for example the Tanaka oil which also enables easy measuring of the ratio.

Or to make things easier, you can get a premixed fuel.

Are there any accessories I should buy?

We recommend getting a spare string and also the Tanaka’s oil which makes measuring the right oil-gas ratio really easy (or the premixed fuel if you don’t want to do it yourself).

And if you want to use this tool as a brush cutter as well, get the conversion kit and for example the Renegade blade.

Is there any maintenance needed?

Gas powered string trimmers require some additional upkeep like cleaning the air filter or adding stabilizer to the fuel for winter storage – please read our guide or refer to the user manual for more info.
