The WORX WG309 is a quality electric pole chain saw – powerful, very easy to use and with a detachable saw. The automatic oiler and chain tensioning help as well, only the motor is located on the top so it’s quite heavy on the upper side.

Pros:
  • Removable chainsaw
  • Good power, fast cutting
Cons:
  • Head-heavy

Handling and reach

man cutting a branch using the WG309The WG309 comes with all the pros and cons of electric tools – it’s very easy to use (a push-button start and only a little maintenance), not too pricey, you are not limited by battery running time and also don’t have to mix fuel.

On the other hand, you have to drag a power cord to all places where you’d like to use it. Plus most of its weight lies at the top so when extended, it’s more difficult to control and requires some upper body strength.

Therefore it probably wouldn’t be a best pick for women or seniors (for those we would rather recommend the SunJoe SWJ800E).

The pole is easy to put together, the assembly won’t take you more than 5 minutes. And when fully extended, it offers a reach of approximately 12 feet, depending on your height of course.

Power and cutting

Using the chainsaw separately

The WORX pole saw is designed for light or medium duty trimming and pruning around your yard. And while the heavy saw on the end of the pole makes maneuvering more difficult, it also makes this tool really effective when cutting.

You just rest it on the branch and let its weight do the job – the saw slices through limbs really fast (3-4″ like a butter and even 5-7″ branches are not a problem).

And the best part? The chainsaw is removable (no tools needed) so after pruning, you can detach it from the pole and slice the fallen limbs into pieces. And it can be also very useful as a small portable chainsaw whenever you need to cut a few pieces but don’t want to drag out a large gasoline saw.

Oiling and chain tensioning is automatic and both work well. One user reported problems with the tensioning system, but doing it manually is also very easy.

Conclusion: If you want a quality pole saw with solid power and don’t mind using a power cord, WORX WG309 would be a great choice for you. Very easy to use and with a detachable chainsaw – we can definitely recommend it.

However, it is still intended mainly for occasional homeowner use – for heavy pruning, take a look at these ones.

Frequently asked questions:

Are there any accessories I should buy?

If you don’t have a long extension cord yet, go with the Coleman 100 feet cable.

Also, you would need some oil for the chain (it’s not included) – for example this one.

Is there any maintenance needed?

The motor is an enclosed unit so no maintenance is required. You’ll just need to fill the oil reservoir when it becomes empty.
