Cordless

using the metal guide while trimming near stonesThe GreenWorks 21332 shares all the advantages of cordless weed whackers – complete freedom of movement, no messing with the cord (and winding it up after trimming) or switching outlets. Also no maintenance, noise or vibrations typical for gas trimmers.

It is lightweight and quiet enough, there are slight vibrations but nothing serious. Also easy to assemble, it won’t take more than 5 minutes.

Power and line feeding

With the increased voltage, cordless trimmers are getting more and more powerful – don’t expect the performance of a gas machine (there is still a significant gap); however, for it has plenty of power for a regular lawn and doesn’t bog down.

On the other hand, it’s not possible to modulate speed (to save battery time or increase the speed to cut tougher weeds more easily) like with the LST136W from Black&Decker.

The trimmer uses autofeed to advance the line, so no bumping is required – it works OK for the most part, a few users report slight problems.

Battery

The battery is probably the main advantage of this weed wacker – it’s quite expensive and big, but provides a long running time, users report between 35-70 minutes on the 4Ah battery. It also features a charge level indicator so you know approximately how much power you have left.

21332 is part of the Greenwork’s new 40V G-MAX lineup so if you own some other machines from this collection, you probably already have some spare batteries. Just be careful – these batteries are not compatible with the older 40V (non G-MAX )!

The battery can be easily removed using a snap on and off design and it takes about an hour (the 2Ah battery) or 2 hours (the 4Ah) to fully recharge. Greenworks also claims that if you run out of energy just before you finish the job, a few minutes of charging gives you enough full power to complete the trimming.

Edger and adjustments

It’s rather a standard for cordless weed whackers to be equipped with an edger adjustment and this machine is no exception. One-touch system enables a quick change between trimming and edging tasks, a metal guide for keeping appropriate distance from objects is present as well.

This tool is also equipped with an edging wheel for more precision – however, the wheel is attached to the shield and therefore quite wobbly, cumbersome and almost useless. Also some users report that the shield is too deep and often ends up scraping the ground.

Other adjustments include setting the shaft height and angle of the handle, a nice feature is the ability to change the angle of the head (one-touch conversion again) which makes trimming hard to reach areas a lot easier.

Conclusion:  The GreenWorks 21332 is a solid grass trimmer/edger – lightweight, easy to use and with a decent power. You won’t make a mistake buying it especially if you own some other Greenworks G-MAX 40V tools.

But if your don’t plan getting any more machines from this lineup, we would rather recommend you the Black & Decker LST136W which is very similar but slightly better in our opinion.

However, this trimmer is still intended mainly for lighter/medium jobs – for heavy trimming, gas machines are the way to go.

Frequently asked questions:

How should I treat the battery to ensure maximum lifetime?

Always store the batteries inside your house in reasonable temperatures – never leave them on direct sun or outdoors during winter! Also recharge the battery as soon as it is out of power.

What is included in the package?

There are three options available – a bare tool, option with 2Ah battery and charger and the last option with 4Ah battery and charger. All three include an initial spool as well.

Are there any accessories I should buy?

We recommend getting the 3 spool replacement package and if you have a larger yard (or plan to get more tools from the Greenworks 40V G-MAX lineup), consider buying a spare battery.

Is there any maintenance needed?

No, the motor is an enclosed unit so no maintenance is required. Just ensure a proper care to the battery (see above) and clean the machine from dead grass occasionally.

Is it compatible with the older 40V batteries?

No, the G-MAX 40V tools are not compatible with older 40V batteries. When in doubt, just look for the “G-MAX” marking.
