The Karcher K 5.540 is an electric pressure washer for light or medium difficulty jobs around your house – it offers decent power, but unfortunately there are also many quality issues so we would rather recommend you to stay away from it.

Pros:
  • Detergent concentration dial
Cons:
  • Low build quality
  • Sometimes it stopped working completely
  • Tips over easily

Karcher X-Series 2000 PSI Pressure Washer

Handling and build quality

With 2000 PSI the K 5.540 is one of the most powerful pressure washers of the Karcher’s X-Series. However, it got quite poor reviews from the users – let’s take a look why.

The main problem is without a doubt the construction and design. It’s very easy to assemble and move around, but that’s just about it – there are too many cheap plastic parts and the construction is just poor. After some time it starts to break at multiple places, the cord and wand holders ale flimsy (users reported they had to fix them with screws), seals start to leak or it even stops working completely – and the customer service also isn’t very good.

It’s high enough so you can comfortably move it using the wheels, but that also leads to another problem – it makes it a bit top heavy and therefore easy to tip over. One stronger pull on the hose and the unit falls to the ground, sometimes also breaking the weak plastic hose quick connect.

Power and areas of use

Its power is far away from gas powered cleaners of course, but for classical light or medium washing jobs around your house it’s pretty adequate.

The regulator of detergent concentration

Several users question the 2000 PSI and find a value of 1600 or 1800 more accurate – but even that enables most of the required tasks like cleaning a car, siding, garage floor, garden furniture, small deck, concrete walkways or bricks (take a look below at some before/after shots). And as most electric pressure washers, it runs quietly.

You can choose from two different wands – a high pressure spray nozzle for tougher jobs or a Vario Power Spray wand where you can adjust the pressure and angle of spray. They work okay, just don’t expect miracles – sometimes you have to get really close to wash the dirt off and cleaning a large area would take a very long time.

And a soap dispenser is also present, you just fill the tank with a cleaning fluid of your choice and use the adjustable wand (on lowest pressure) to apply it – plus you can also select how much detergent will be used using a dial on the front of the unit.

Conclusion:  The K 5.540 from Karcher offers enough power for the classical washing jobs around your house, but still we can’t recommend it at all – there are simply too many problems like low build quality or tipping over. You can get much better units for half the price, just check out our most recommended medium-duty pressure washers.
