Handling and build quality

As a gas powered pressure washer, the Generac 6596 has several advantages and also disadvantages when compared to electric units – firstly, it’s more powerful so all the tasks are done much faster and it can handle even the really tough jobs, also you are not limited by a power cord and outlet nearby. On the other hand it’s heavier, louder and there is some maintenance needed. Also it’s not possible to use it indoors because of the carbon monoxide emissions.

It’s very easy to setup and use (only about 20 minutes to get out of the box, assemble and add gas and oil, no tools are required), the base is sturdy and solid and there are no water leaks. Thanks to the large wheels, it’s easy to move around, and also surprisingly easy to store as the base is quite compact in terms of width and depth (but it doesn’t tip over, don’t worry).

The only problem users mention is that the hose is stiff and doesn’t unwind easily – and taking some time to unwind and straighten it properly is recommended because otherwise the coils may get in touch with the hot parts of the engine which can result in damaging the hose. Also, a few people mentioned receiving some broken parts in the box, it seems the packaging isn’t perfect.

Power and areas of use

Cleaning fluid tank stored at the bottom

The 6596 model works great and offers plenty of power for all cleaning jobs you’ll need to do around your house. Users report it’s perfect for cars, siding, outdoor furniture, fence, driveway full of dirt and moss, limestone around pool, truck wheels covered in mud or getting many years of dirt from decks or sidewalks.

It starts easily (on first two or three pulls) and runs smoothly. Just make sure the water is turned on before starting it, otherwise you can damage the pump. Also if you plan to release the trigger for a longer time, shut the motor down so the pump does not overheat.

The pressure itself is not adjustable, however there are 4 nozzles you can choose from – 0°, 25°, 40° and a soap tip. They are placed conveniently on the handle and very easy to switch. Also, a large detergent tank is placed at the bottom of the unit (see the photo nearby).

Conclusion:  If you need a quality pressure washer for residential use and want more power and efficiency that electric tools can offer, the Generac 6596 would be a great choice for you. The 2,800 PSI gives it enough power for all kinds of jobs around your house and it’s still easy to use and store. We can definitely recommend it.

Frequently asked questions:

What kind of fuel should be used?

Any quality gas will do, just stay away from ethanol! Also, it’s a 4-cycle unit so no mixing with oil is needed.

Can you adjust the pressure?

No, it’s a fixed pressure unit – but the different nozzles enable you to change the power of the spray (narrow beam for stubborn dirt, wide spray for car for example). And you can also vary the distance from tip to the surface to adjust pressure.

Does it come with oil?

Yes, a small bottle with engine oil is included. There are two places where you can pour it and you can use either one. The pump is sealed so no oiling is required.

How to stop the detergent from being sucked from the tank?

The soap will flow from the tank only if the soap nozzle is used – so just swap it for any of the pressure tips. You can also unplug the plastic tube from the tank.
